Broadband Genie, an independent broadband and mobile broadband comparison website, has warned that ‘free’ or subsidised laptop deals may not be as good as they first appear.
The problem is that the deals can tie the purchaser into a restrictive two year contract, which offers poor value in the longer term.
Broadband Genie believes that it may be more cost effective to buy a laptop and dongle separately.
Often, the customer repays the cost of the laptop over the term of the contract, when they might be better off using an alternative form of finance.
This is often true for students, who would get a better deal by using their student loan facility.
The offers also only provide a very limited choice of machines.
